46 school shootings in 2015, but we don't have a problem.

October 9, 2015

The 46th school shooting of 2015 just happened this morning (10/9/2015) in Flagstaff, Arizona on the campus of Northern Arizona University.  We cannot continue to pretend that nothing is broken or that the answer is simply to arm more people.

I'm not anti guns but if we think that 46 school shootings in one year shouldn't motivate us to take a fresh look at gun ownership and gun laws in the USA, then we are a sick, self-absorbed nation who values their weapons more than life itself.  How long do we need to wait before we are willing to talk about it?  Do we need 50 school shootings?  100?  1000?  Or will there never be a number high enough?  Let's get honest.  Guns ARE a part of the problem.  Yes I know it requires people to shoot guns and I know that crimes can be committed with a myriad of other weapons.  And I know that criminals don't respect the law.  But we can't rest on these excuses and pretend that we don't have a problem in our nation.  We HAVE A GUN PROBLEM but that's only one part of the problem.   We also have a mental health problem.  We also have a legal system problem.  We also have a race problem.  We also have a corrupt political system problem.  We also have an education problem.  We also have a socioeconomic problem.  ALL of these need to be addressed.  None can be left out of the conversation.

We have a problem and I don't see much of anything being done about it.  What I do see are excuses and defenses as to why we don't have a problem or how it is someone else's problem.

As long as we value our rights more than our responsibilities we will never make any progress.

My heart goes out to those who have lost loved ones in the 47 shootings this year.  May those who lost their lives rest in peace.
